1m race- 4:26.89. (Same time as last year to the tenth!) The whole pack went out screaming and I was almost last through .2m (5 lap/mile track) in 52 (4:20 pace)... last lap was 49 (4:05 pace)... So I think it's safe to say I had a couple 70+'s in there and ran it like a HS freshman. But I had fun and live another year w/ a sub 4:30 under my belt!

15m@5:49 Splits from 6:12-5:33.

Just finished reading Jack Daniels' Running Formula this week. My most recent race (4:26 mile last Saturday) gives me a VDOT of 68. Considering all my training and racing is at altitude, I don't feel a need to adjust it for training purposes. But also considering I didn't do any speedwork going into that and I ran with ridiculous splits, I decided to go off a VDOT of 69 for training. That also would make my marathon pace 5:32 (2:24:57 marathon)... which i think is what I will be aiming for at Utah Valley in June.

Anyways... all that to say that a 69 VDOT puts my easy miles at 6:06-6:55 and marathon pace at 5:32. since 34s separates 5:32 and 6:06, I say that if it's 5:49 or below (within 17s...closer to marathon than easy) then it's "marathon pace" mileage. So 10 of my miles were 5:49 or faster today.

Who all uses Jack Daniels' training plans for their marathon training? I'm trying to write a plan for myself or pick one of his, or even just do what I did last time.

Pretty solid run. Have you raced a half yet on a similar course? For me in the past that was always the best predictor. Daniels in my opinion is a solid training guide but you may need to make adjustments here and there depending on your physiology, (muscle fiber type etc..) Good luck. It definitely looks as if you have the engine for that kind of time if not faster..

From RustyTF2 on Sat, Jan 16, 2016 at 12:41:19 from 75.169.193.38

Thanks for the reply, Steve! Yeah I've done Utah Valley half in 1:08:58... which wouldn't be much faster than the sub 2:25... but I didn't train much for it. I think I have to train quite a bit harder to get a similar result in a marathon. I ran SGM last year and training was going so well that I was maybe a little overly ambitious, among other things going wrong... and ended up walking a lot of the last 5k and finishing in 2:28:32. I'm thinking I will run a similar half 5 weeks before the marathon this year to see where I'm at.

I see that Daniels' plan often has 2 solid workouts a week over 20 miles! That seems like a lot for twice a week. I can see a 15er and a 20+ but there are weeks with a 22 and 23!

From steve ash on Sat, Jan 16, 2016 at 12:49:11 from 67.2.211.42

Yeah, thats a lot.. I'm from the school of 15-20 miles once a week with 10 mile MP stretches toward the end. And then maybe a 10-15 miler in the middle of the week with alternate LT/MP efforts. But only after you have maxed out your aerobic buildup and LT perhaps.

From RustyTF2 on Sat, Jan 16, 2016 at 13:17:16 from 75.169.193.38

That sounds much more manageable :) By aerobic buildup do you mean mileage or are you referring to VO2 max work?

On my run this morning (2/19), I finished exactly where I started and had the mileage at 10.90. After I stopped my watch, it restarted and came back up as only 10.85. If you look on today's map, it appears I stopped before I got to my final stopping point (where I started). This has happened a few times and I don't understand why the watch restarts itself and does this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you! Taylor

I haven't heard of that problem. Have you tried a master reset? Garmin will likely respond though and let you know what's up. They are pretty good at customer support. I had bad bands that kept coming off the watch, and they sent me brand new bands for free, no problems since.

Still sicky. I probably could run today, but I'd rather not drag this thing on any longer. Plus, I've had some medial knee joint pain over the past week on my right knee. I had a partial lateral menisectomy in 2008 so I'm a little nervous about the potential of having the same problem on the medial side now. Giving it a couple days rest could only help.

The pace today was tough but we eased into it and I had 2 separate 4 mile segments averaging 5:41...just a tick slower than my PR marathon avg pace. And another quick last mile in 5:43. The rest were all still under 6 except the first 2. Good, quality run for me right now.

Very happy with this week. After my ups and downs the past month or two with sickness and a hip flexor strain, I was starting to get anxious about my fitness heading into this Utah Valley Marathon buildup. I told myself if I could at least run easy everyday this week and get 60 miles then I'd still be in it. I did that so as long as I can keep progressing and stay healthy, I think I have a great shot at improving on my marathon PR. I think I'll go into this one with less pressure and expectations on myself, really keeping things controlled and pretty easy for at least the first half. That way I can have a good experience and want to come back for maybe a more aggressive approach again at SGM later in the year. Excited about running! Excited about racing!

Felt pretty easy throughout, but on my 3rd repeat I noticed my left calf (soleus) was feeling pretty tight. It slowly got worse and worse until I was pretty much hobbling home the last mile of the cooldown. I thought I was being safe by jogging it in easy but I really shoulda just hitched a ride back in. It's been really sore and I've been limping all morning. I've been used to doing half or more of my runs in 12mm drop shoes... this week I upped the mileage and ran in 8mm, 5mm, and 4mm drop shoes. Rookie mistake. I've been doing everything I know how for it but I think I'll likely end up having to cross train tomorrow. Dang it. Wasn't even that awesome of a workout... wish I could go back in time and just run today easy in different shoes.

Only stop during 1st mile and 5s at 3m into tempo for traffic.

Felt really good and pretty easy but I think it's a false sense of fitness. Taking about a week off for my calf has probably made my legs pretty fresh. I was really hoping for a better base and buildup going into PCHM and UVM but in the past couple months I've taken 5 weeks pretty much completely off: 2 for a sinus infection, 2 for a sore hip flexor, 1 for a sore calf. I just keep jumping back into it, over eager to get my mileage and workouts up to where I want them. Even though I know better, it is so hard to be patient sometimes. I still think these races can be decent, but I'm not really sure I'll be seeing PR's at this point.

13.26@5:33... (1:13:41... 5:37 official pace). Not an all out effort, but definitely a strong one. Felt good and easy when I was finally coming in, but the technicality of the course made the race feel pretty long mentally. Also the fact that until two miles to go, Jace Nye and I were playing Cat and Mouse...switching roles about every mile. Knowing that only top 3 get a payday, there was some stress trying to figure out how to put some distance on him without going to the well. Very hilly, constantly turning and changing course. Not sure how to separate my miles but it was probably somewhere between threshold and MP... so I'll just split them up about even.

Legs certainly don't feel fresh yet, but they should be good to go by Saturday! The goal/plan is 5:10 pace and a PR. PR is from Des News last summer (1:07:58) which was pretty much off 40mpw. My training lately has been much better, albeit inconsistent due to sinus infection, hip flexor strain and a calf strain. This course isn't as fast as Des News but I think/hope I'm ready to run just a couple seconds faster on this course Saturday.

1:08:00? or just under 109? If it's 1:08:00 then we might see each other ALOT on the course, back and forth haha. Are you alternating 5:05 w/ 5:25? 5:00 w/ 5:20? Odd miles MP and even HMP or vice-versa?

From RileyCook on Wed, May 04, 2016 at 09:30:22 from 172.56.8.171

I'm alternating every K. I may annoy you with the back and forth, if so, sorry. I will shoot for 5:00/5:20-ish. But it really just depends on how I feel. I can't force the pace if it's too tiring; can't risk digging a hole before Ogden. But I ran 1:07:50 two weeks ago off 100 miles and felt pretty dang good, so I think I should be ok with 5:00/5:20 off high mileage again.

I can't wait to taper though! 4 weeks at 100+ and 90 this week!

Got to the busses right about 5:30, waited on a stationary bus for a while, and we were up at the top by 6:20 if I remember right. Went to the bathrooms and started warming up at about 6:30.

2m warmup@ ~7:15, a few strides and a little extra light jogging

7am- Race started, Dave Taylor went to the front and I passed him sometime a little before the mile marker. Riley was doing a Fartlek, alternating 1k's MP and HMP... so in the second mile he passed me, then we pretty much passed each other back and forth for the first half of the race, maybe a little longer, before he gradually pulled away doing his workout. He gave me encouragement a few times which was nice and helped me stick to my goal of a new PR which was 1:07:58. I felt great in the beginning and was still averaging 5:06 pace halfway through the race. The lack of mileage and consistency, however, caught up to me pretty good by mile 10. The breathing was fine from start to finish... but the last 4 miles my legs got progressively weaker. I felt like I was loosing control of them and it was frustrating cuz everything upstairs, above the lowback, felt super easy! But my lowback tightened, my hips and quads weakened, and my legs started knocking a bit more. I now know what it feels like first-hand to not be strong enough to maintian proper form, and suffer biomechanically because of it. The big thing here is more mileage and workouts at that pace. The next thing would be strengthening exercises... single leg balance, hip control, eccentric hamstrings and those sorts of things. My workouts have been more aimed at closer to MP so I'm hoping to feel much more comfortable in the marathon in 5 weeks....but I also plan to go out very conservatively- not necessarily gunning for a PR. The lowback tightness I've been dealing with all week from being on my feet in the clinic so much. It's made me want to do a better job practicing what I preach and getting the right core exercises in. I was surpised I was still able to finish strong despite the legs going a little extra weird on me this time.

The splits: 5:04, 5:06, 5:17, 4:58, 5:01, 5:06, 5:12, 5:12, 5:17, 5:21, 5:26, 5:17, 5:21, 4:20 pace for .05m. (I thought it was weird my watch got 13.05... .05 short of a half and .1 short of what most USATF certified courses typically run on my watch... yet Run13's website says the course is USATF certified.)

After mile 10 or 11 I knew a PR wouldn't happen, so I stopped trying to hit 5:10's. Little did I know, the course would run a little short on my watch and I still ended up with a 5 second PR. But I think just focusing on keeping my place the last few miles helped me keep going better than focusing on my pace. I thought Travis Fuller was within 20s of me the last few miles, but he ended up finishing in 1:09:2x...about 90s behind me. Riley beat me pretty good and finished in 1:06:xx...5:06 pace is all I remember.

5m CD @ 7:24 to get 20 for the day!

Now I need to try and get some decent mileage the next few weeks to have the legs ready for 26.2 of downhill at UVM!

Great race Taylor and congrats again on the PR!

Here's the certification:

http://www.usatf.org/events/courses/maps/showMap.asp?courseID=UT13008GAN

It is certified. So, it would only be short if they didn't line the start and finish up to match the certification (which could happen). But, either way I say take the PR, enjoy it, and crush it later this summer!

Also used KT tape to support the patella but the rain made it come loose at mile 6 so I took it off. I wish my knee would have felt better... really nice evening in the drizzle for a run.

Running with Ed Relay in Park City w/ the Altra team.

About a mile warmup, then 3.4m uphill, sloppy climb on mostly single track up to the base of the ski jumps (leg 3)...6:25 pace.

.25m jog to van

40 minutes later- leg 6 (6 miles)...turned into 9.1 miles cuz I got lost and ran extra... 5:47 pace but I stopped a couple times to try and get directions. Satellite was weird at the beginning cuz I started in a school... so not too sure on how accurate that pace was. Lots of rain but lots of fun, at least while I was on course :)

Fun day! We got the overall win even w/ our mixed team. My first experience in the Altra One... and I fell in love. Definitely considering switching from the Nike lunaracer to the Altra One for future 1/2 marathon and marathon road races.

After your marathon at UV, I'd highly recommend you rest until that knee heals.

You're starting to sound eerily similar to me in 2014 in the two months leading up to my injury. My knee hurt, but I kept going as it wasn't the worst pain ever and eventually I kept going too much and lost the whole season as a result.

From RustyTF2 on Thu, May 26, 2016 at 20:21:49 from 97.117.29.30

Riley, I just joined a Ragnar Wasatch Back team and decided to drop UVM... I figured the marathon would do more harm than good at this point. The knee is finally feeling better the past couple days so I'm optimistic I'll be out of the woods after a couple more days... but I'm definitely still on guard and I'll just take time off soon if it gets stagnant again. Thanks for the advice and concern!

We started at Gibson Jack and ran up to Sterling Justice Overlook, then descended and climbed again up to Over the Top, then down into Lower City Creek. Very rugged terrain. I must have looked drunk because I fell FIVE TIMES! It was frustrating. I didn't feel tired at all and we were going easy. Once we ran hard the last two miles down windy technical terrain, I had no problem... probably becuase I was so alert. The rest of the time just felt like an easy jog while chatting...which may have led to all the falls. 1,700+ feet of elevation gain.

My family and I will be moving here in early August for my final rotation before returning to Utah for Thanksgiving, graduation, and the holidays. Then at the end of December we'll head back up to Pasco/Tri-cities and begin my career as a Physical Therapist with a great company and mentor. I started off slow because I didn't want to lead it. Last year I led 90% of the race and got outkicked and didn't want that to happen again... I also knew I wasn't very fit and had no incentive to try and run a fast time. Despite my slow start, I led up the canyon. At times, Manuel and I would run side by side. On the turn around I wanted to pick it up alot and kept the lead the entire way. With about a mile and a half to go I opened up a small gap and then just kept building it. My last mile was really strong and I ended up winning by 30 seconds! Fun, competitive effort... even though the racing didn't begin until halfway. Glad I got to do this as my last race in Utah before moving up to Washington state.

Out and back course from Columbia point Marina past WSU satellite campus and back. Slightly windy the whole way, picked up pretty strong miles 11-12. Light rain/drizzle throughout. Nice cuz the weather made the bugs less active... only swallowed a few.

It was a good effort, but not 100%. I wanted to beat the CR (or at least the fastest time I could find back till 2001, I'm not sure they really keep track of the CR) from Jacob Puzey in 2009 (1:13:05)... but I also wasn't sure of my fitness or how well recovered I was from Thursday's workout (I thought the race was next weekend). So I went out on 1:13ish pace thinking if it felt too hard I could slow it down and readjust my goal to either sub 1:14 or 1:15. Luckily it felt pretty smooth throughout! The last couple miles took some concentration but not as much as my best half-mary's in Utah.  The combination of rain and short socks caused a bloody achilles that bothered me from about mile 5 to 10...after that my mind was more occupied with keeping pace.

Fun race! I was happy to be able to meet lots of people in the Tri-cities running scene and hope to keep making more friends and running more races as often as possible!
