2.5m warmup. 6x800m at BYU indoor track w/ bro and team. (kind of... I was at the back).  Team did 8x800 but I sat one in the middle out and skipped the last one. First workout since my Turkey Trott! all were 2:15-2:17, averaging 2:16. 2:30 rest w/ jogging between each, except 7:30 rest after the 3rd. 4m cool down. 10 total. HAPPY NEW YEARS!

At home watching my baby boy all day today while Jill is at work. So I did some core strengthening exercises for about 15 minutes. I saw these posted on Facebook yesterday and decided I'd give them a try. I added some side planks as well. And had to modify many of the exercises because I don't have an exercise ball (yet). Also added side-lying hip abductor exercises.

16 miles @6:35 pace on Murdock Canal Trail in Orem/Lindon/Pleasant Grove. Ran with brother and other BYU runners and alums. Trail was mostly clear with some icy spots.

This was my first time running over 15 miles since August of 2007! I always stopped at 15 in college for fear of injury, although my pace was often much faster than today. I'm pumped about this! Maybe I will start going even longer on my weekend runs... I've never done a 2 hour run... maybe i could do 18@6:40 sometime in the near future for 2 hours. That would be fun!

Splits: 5:15, 5:18, 5:19, 5:22, 5:15 pace for .88. 2.62m @ 8:06 cooldown. Forgot to bring flats today. Good effort, but not all out. PR on this course is from February 2014- 23:48 (4:53 pace)

We are racing each other on Saturday! Best of luck to you my friend! I am working out at BYU tonight.

From RustyTF2 on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 11:56:44 from 97.126.249.242

Sweet dude! I'm not sure we will be racing "together" so much as me racing behind you haha. a mid 4:20's would be a great day for me. Only speed I've done at all in months is my 800's last Thursday, where i never went faster than 2:15. I just like to race! Even if it's 20 seconds slower than it used to be.

From Cliff on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 13:36:26 from 50.204.66.16

Well, this will be my first track race since I ruptured my plantar fascia exactly two years ago. This is going to be interesting for both of us! haha I am really excited to race, though.

8.25m@6:58 w/ little bro Dallin. Then on my own 2 laps at a little slower than mile pace (on the 5 lap per mile BYU indoor track). 643.6m (.4mile) - 1:51. jog some, 2x200 (28,29). .5m cd. 9.5m total for the day.

First time putting spikes on since my last track race at BYU in May 2014. I'm signed up for the slow heat of the mile at the BYU indoor meet saturday afternoon! I just wanted to test the pace today a little since I haven't done any speed except for those 800's last thursday (which really weren't very fast).. Saturday will be fun and interesting!

I got a bad start at my race...partially because I had no confidence that I should be right up at the front. Learned a valuable lesson...just get to the front and THEN decide if you want to fade back. The race went out SLOW and I was stuck at the back of it. I moved up very slowly throughout the race but I usually had to move out to lane 2 or 3 to do it (Very crowded track with tight turns and 15 runners on the track). I closed hard at the end and almost caught the winner. He got me by .15. Nice guy from UVU. It was a lot of fun and I surpassed my expectations! I still get a kick out of racing even when it's not nearly as fast as it used to be. Just fun to compete!

10.25m@6:57 w/ bro and BYU. Wore my "rain jacket" but still was sopping wet head to toe. River trail out to the Lake and back... maybe would have been a better day for the treadmill. Especially since Dallin was having stomach issues and had to slow down and use the bathroom twice. Still fun though and I'm glad I got out there and ran.

7m@8:08 on Firebreak trail starting up above Orem cemetery. Some tricky footing in the snow but a very enjoyable run! Tacked on about half a mile at the end on Bonneville Shoreline trail and it seems much more runable! I could see a lot of dirt even! Next time I will run that.

Listened to a podcast from trail runner nation during run about what it will take to run a 1:59 marathon and I think that guy they interviewed is a quack.

Right achilles felt a little tight tender. probably from not warming up and jumping straight into speedwork yesterday... stupid, I know.

Bottom of left forefoot a little sore/tender... probably from running about 7 miles in my spikes this week after pretty much not having worn spikes in 8 months! Again... stupid, I know.

Trail run. 7:59 avg pace. Lots of mud, snow drifts, slosh... had to stop and hike a lot. In fact, I probably hiked about the same amount of time i spent running. Fun being up closer to the mountains with some nice views.

Earlier in the day I did "Jillian's 30 minute shred" with my wife. Actually not a bad workout! Left bottom of forefoot still feeling sore on the lateral aspect. Pretty sure its just from all the spike usage last week. Hopefully Sunday off will have it healed for a comfortable Monday run.

1.5 miles on treadmill in 10 minutes as part of my cardiopulmonary lab, then 10 minutes on the bike. We were testing peripheral edema in the feet after walking, jogging, and biking compared to at rest. Lesson learned- those with congestive heart failure should bike because it causes the least amount of swelling in the feet, meaning that blood isn't getting backed up behind the right chambers of the heart, and is instead being pumped as it should from the periphery back to and through the heart.

This week I'm a little overwhelmed with my classes, so I probably won't really be able to go for a run until Friday :(

10m@7:17 on Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Started at trail head above Orem cemetery and ran north to 1 canyon past battle creek (I think it is Grove Creek?).

10 miles is a long way at that pace on that terrain! I admittedly walked up 3 different hills, totalling 200 meters worth of walking. The heart rate was just getting up higher than it should be for an "easy" day. Perhaps next time I'll just have to swallow my pride and run slower. I saw an entire animal's vertebral column complete with ribs sitting alone on the side of the trail... the rest had decayed. CRAZY.

First time running 20 miles! First ~4 miles were warm up around 7:00. Then the next 8 were a tempo at 5:20 average. Then a pretty chill pace the next 6 miles and closed with a couple quicker ones. Average 6:16.

Ran at the Jordan Rivery Parkway w/ Jon Kotter, Fritz,  Toni, Scott Keatte, and a few other studs. Windy day but we made sure the wind was mostly at our backs for the tempo section. Had a great time! First time running with this group and on this trail. Thanks for the invite, Fritz! I'll have to join these guys again. I know I always say it and it never really happens, but I really think I WILL be sore after this one.

My first 65 mile week since last track season! I hit 60 once last fall so this was really a big week for me Coming off of last Saturday's 20 made it a little harder too, I think.

13.15m@5:34 pace. Wow that course was tougher than I anticipated! Lots of golf course hills and windy paths through the rose gardens. Very unique and fun race. I'm really glad I did it. Brett Hales shot off from the gun and beat me by 3.5 minutes while taking a wrong turn that probably cost him 1-2 minutes...so yeah he litearlly would have beat me by a mile. I'm okay with that. Me, Jacob Bradosky (3rd, recently transfered to Air Force base in Clearfield) and Jace Nye (4th) ran together the first 5 miles or so, taking turns leading pretty naturally. When Jake and I broke away we were probably pretty evenly split between leading duties. We both seemed to be feeling about the same so neither of us made any strong moves till about a mile out he picked up the pace. I picked up the pace again with 800 to go and then again drastically w/ 200 to go to get him by 10 seconds. Not that it was an easy race by any means, but I feel that if someone else had been further ahead i maybe could have run a minute or so faster by sitting. Alas, that wasn't the case and I'm pleased w/ my effort and performance.

5.97m@ 5:23. Pocatello fun runs are a lot of fun and motivate me to get out there and run a fast tempo that I might not run otherwise alone in Pocatello, but they are pretty unofficial. Start was with the sound of the bells, but we had no clue that was the start...so no one started for another few seconds. My official time, therefore, must be a few seconds slower than my watch time that i listed above. Course was point to point and included a couple 100 foot rises and declines throughout. The first 4 miles were against the wind, and the last 2 were with the wind, which was quite nice. Splits: 5:25, 5:39, 5:29, 5:40, 5:13, 4:53 for .97m. I realized with 2 to go that I just allowed the wind to slow me down and give a lesser effort, so i turned it on more towards the end. Not a great race effort, but probably a pretty decent tempo effort nonetheless. It would be fun to get in a competitive road race soon and re-kindle some competitive fire.

Great way to start the week! I copied this workout from mike nelson cuz I saw he did it last week and it looked like fun. Only bad thing about this workout is that when i was pushing the split button on my garmin finishing the first interval, the strap broke! So I ran the next 8 miles holding it in my palm. Still need to figure out how to reattach it, but I'm pretty sure it's not broken. It's my trusty old Garmin Forerunner 405 that I bought at Costco in 2010.

16m@6:25. 8m out and back. 1st 2 downhill, next 6 up up up and up pocatello creek road, then on moonlite or something up to some ranch. Averaged 6:42 the first 8 miles and that really tired me out good with all that uphill. I then attempted a 6 mile downhill tempo, but only got 4 before I had to stop. Averaged 5:18 pace. I think 6 would have been no problem if I didn't go so hard on the way up. The next 2 miles I trotted to a park and took a 5 minute break to guzzle down as much water as I could fit in my belly. At this point it was really hot outside and I new I was very dehydrated from not drinking enough yesterday or this morning before the run. Then I had a hellish 2 miles up Satterfield to finish the run. What a horrible day. I still have only been able to get 2 squirts of pee out 2 hours later and there was blood in my urine. I'm excited to get back to Utah and do my long runs on the flat, nice, paved trails with good company. From now on I'm commiting to go into these runs properly hydrated and start sooner than 9 am.

9m@7:32 in the hills above the highland area. Ran with my bro-in-law, Mark, and he helped me make an old out and back trail route into an awesome loop! We had to run through an alph-alpha field briefly, avoid being charged by a bull by running off the track for a bit, scatter some cows, and tackle some good hills. I love making loops, especially on trail runs, so this was a lot of fun for me. We went up the farmers trail till about 3.5 miles, where we took the right fork up the hill, then took another right till we found a single track on the left leading us to just above "rollercoaster". We took the shady side down and added on by using the single track that traverses back to the farmer road we started on. Long trail runs are just so much more fun to me with a running partner. Maybe it's cuz I'm afraid of what I would do if I had to encounter that bull alone...

Last run in Pocatello! We are moving back to Orem this afternoon. Looking forward to having running partners again and running on the murdock canal trail, Provo canyon, etc. It's just so much easier for me to get good training down there with the weather (less wind), running partners, and smooth, fast paths. Although I look forward to my running back in Utah, I've really enjoyed what Pocatello has to offer, particularly the off-road trail running in the highland hills and city creek. Lots of good trails for me to tackle back in Utah too though. It's been a great six weeks and most importantly, I had a great learning experience and grew a ton as a physical therapist in my clinical affiliation.

Lots of good guys to run with today! Mike and I decided before the race it would be a good idea to split the lead every half mile to help with the wind, since we were planning on about 5:15's. We did that for about 8 miles and it was really nice! The race played out almost exactly as it did last year. I switched leads with Iain Hunter last year till about the same point and also finished 3rd last year... minutes behind 2 runners who were out of my league. The difference was mostly in my last mile. Instead of 5:00 it was 5:15... and I ran 16 seconds slower this year. I am very pleased with my effort and the result, especially considering the lack of consistency in good workouts the past couple months.

Splits: 5:17.4, 5:14.7, 5:26, 5:14.6, 5:04.9, 5:10.4, 5:15.1, 5:20.1, 5:11.8, 5:20.5, 5:25.6, 5:14.7, 5:12.4, 46 seconds for .16m (4:53 pace) I was ahead of pace from last years time through 12 miles... but wasn't able to finish as well as I did last year.

I wore my brother's watch cuz my strap has broke 3 times in the past week or so...and I didn't want to risk that happening in the race. He has a Garmin forerunner 220 and I loved it! His watch got me at 13.16m@5:15... I think the race result is 1:09:14, or 5:17 pace. Average cadence was 182 steps per minute.

So both times I have run this race, the last 2-3 miles I feel like I have a hitch in my stride and my legs want to buckle. My breathing feels easy but my legs just don't work as well. I also felt like I wanted to fall backwards..downhill, flat, and even on the slight uphill. Have any of you had this problem? My best guess is my glutes are shot by the end of all that downhill and I start to compensate with an "extensor lurch"...only bilaterally. I think it's a matter of training higher mileage and more downhill. I'd love to hear if any of you have had a similar issue or what your thoughts are on it.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Jun 13, 2015 at 17:27:05 from 192.168.1.1

Taylor - when the breathing feels easy but the legs do not move the two main causes are either being out of fuel or out of adrenaline. For fuel, you need to run more mileage, long tempos, and fast tempos when you have put some miles in already. For adrenaline, you need to sleep more.

Thanks Riley, it was nice to meet you too! Great race yourself! Sasha, thanks for the input. I definitely agree that an increase in mileage and tempo runs would be helpful. And sleep of course too! 1.2 warmup. 6.05m@5:19. ~.5m cooldown.

First off, considering how abysmal the past 2 weeks of running have been for me(sickness), I'm very pleased with today's race! My GPS got the race a little short-distanced. There was a big group of maybe 10 of us for the first mile. By 2 miles it seemed to have thinned out to 6 of us. At this point Zack Jacklin (future Coug!) was out front by a few seconds. A current SUU runner (blanking on his name but his last name starts with Shana...) closed the gap and ran with him. Nate Clayson (a former Firth, HS in Idaho runner) also closed that gap and then a few more of us did. Zack began to fade back (probably cuz I'd bet he is in the middle of some pretty heavy mileage right now prepping for the fall). Eventually the SUU runner and Nate opened up a good lead again and I battled it out with Jaydn Asay (UVU runner). I pulled away in the last mile that was up 9th east to finish 3rd. BUT WAIT... the SUU runner was a bandit (cuz why pay the money to enter if you can't accept the prizes anyways?) so I got 2nd place in the results. I think it coulda been a competitive and fun finish between me and the other 2 guys ahead of me had I not been sick till 2 days ago. I've heard "recovery runs" should be at 130 bpm... yet I feel fine and easy up at 143..to keep it down at 130 would probably take 8 minute miles...which hardly feels beneficial. I'm surprised my cadence wasn't closer to 180 also.

I knew it would be short of a full 8k, since they had to do a little re-routing due to some construction. We should find out in the next few days what the actual distance of the race was once it's wheeled. Extremely hilly and fun course! I'll give a complete recap tomorrow but I need some sleep first :)

Battle @ Big Springs/My first race as a Sojourner! -Taylor Farnsworth

Yesterday I got to run my first race in Sojourner's Running Club singlet. I'm excited to get to change things up a bit and run in some awesome gear at some awesome races against some awesome guys. I ran the Timp Shadow 5k in April and had a great experience, so I was excited to do race #2 of the Cascadia Trail Series. So excited, in fact, that I drove up to the course earlier in the week to take a look at things. From my two experiences last week running up at Big Springs, I can tell you this- Racing on that terrain is SO MUCH harder than just going for an easy run. Going into the race I had 3 main goals: 1) Don't trip and fall, 2) Get the win, and 3) Get the CR. Turns out the course had to be shortened/re-routed a bit due to some construction, so CR was out of the question from the get-go.

The race started off on a fast downhill stretch for about 1/4 mile. Dave Taylor got out strong and went straight to the front. Shortly after the uphill began, I passed him, with Rory Linkletter in tow. Rory had warned me before the race that the first 1.5 miles are pretty brutal, and I should run conservatively. Unfortunately I didn't take that counsel as seriously as I should have. By 1 mile (6:54), I probably had a 5-10 second lead on Rory, and had climbed almost 400 feet from .25 mile to 1 mile. Shortly after I thought, "What have I done?!" The climb continued for another 5 minutes… up, up up, before the course gives you a few hundred meters of repose. I went through mile 2 in 7:22. I think at this point Rory had decided he was just gonna be doing a training run, because my lead had increased by quite a bit more. Mile 3 was another few hundred feet of climbing that thankfully also included about 100 feet of downhill. These first 3 miles all had plenty of ups and downs, but overall we did a lot of climbing. This third mile is where I had to make a new goal for myself- DON'T WALK. It was so tempting, and on certain hills I thought I may as well be walking for how slow I was moving, but I was able to meet this goal! Mile 3- 7:38. WOOF. Mile 4 had very little uphill and lots of downhill. I looked back a couple times to be sure I wasn't being hunted down. This mile was 5:48. The last .81m was at 4:57 pace. My new watch gave me a new mile "record" at 5:02, so that must have been from 3.81m to the finish. The last 2 miles my breathing eased up and I cruised down the mountain focusing mainly on my new goal of not falling. The terrain was technical, challenging, and fun. I came through the finishing line feeling good and in 1st place in 31:47. Rory and 3rd place had a sprint-off at the end and came in about 90 seconds later.

What I learned from this race is that I need to pace myself a little better in that first mile, and be stronger in the middle uphill miles. Once you hit 1.5m to go, it's all downhill recovery from there. I was amazed at how hard and fast my heart was beating, and how much air I was sucking in the middle of the race, compared to how at ease I felt towards the end after recovering on the downhill. Trail running and racing is still relatively new to me and I feel like I've got lots to learn. I ran in my Altra Superior 2.0's and they handled the course amazingly well, even in the slicker spots.

Place: 1st
Time: 31:47
Distance: Unofficial 4.81m, but will probably be wheeled soon so we can know for sure.

I probably adjusted it 30-50 times throughout the run. I'm not sure if that messed with it or not. It didn't feel THAT hard... then again, I don't run with HR monitors often so maybe that is typical for me. 1 stop for water at 1/2 way. another stop a couple miles from the finish for the bathroom. 2.3m warmup @7:38 pace. 6 mile race. 6 mile cooldown@ 7:43.

About a week ago I decided it would be fun to run a race that I had won last year by 4+ minutes- the Wasatch Wellness 10k. By my opening line, you can probably tell that this isn't typically the MOST competitive race on the block. But I thought it'd be a nice 2nd tempo for the week, and first place gets a $100 prize. (Well, only $72 after registration fees) Second place gets zilch, so the stakes were high in a sense. Two days before the race I didn't have time to run, so the day before the race I decided to go 8 miles. Clearly, I was expecting a similar racing experience to last year.

The gun went off and I went straight to the front. After a few minutes I noticed that someone was still on me. a few minutes later he was still there… and our breathing sounded pretty similar. I realized that whoever was behind me probably wasn't going to just drop off. However, I continued to press forward with confidence, thinking I could squeeze the juice out of him if I kept the pace healthy. My first 3 miles were 5:24, 5:39, 5:46… all ascending up the Provo River trail. The turn around was right at 3 miles and I got a glimpse of my nemesis- a thin, springy, fast looking athlete. He then proceeded to throw a VERY fast surge in the next 100 meters. For a moment I thought it was all over. He must have run 16 seconds over that 100 meters. A quarter mile later I reeled him back in and he relinquished the lead to me again. Mile 4 was 5:05. About a mile later, he threw in a similar surge, which took even more mental effort to cover. I once again regained the lead. Mile 5 was 5:07. It was apparent he was hoping to kill my spirits and then take it in easy, as I kept catching him. At this point I began to have bigger doubts. "Why didn't I run less yesterday? This guy is toying with me, he could take off and own me no problem". I would try to counter these thoughts with some self motivation: "I can just sprint away the last 100-200m meters and he won't be able to stick". But with 400m to go, he made another hugely decisive move… this time I gave up. Then I noticed he looked back and had slowed down considerably. I hesitated, but then decided I had closed bigger gaps before.. and took off! He quickly realized I was gaining and put in another gear himself. He finished first in 31:51, and i came in less than a second later in 31:52. Last mile 4:58 pace for .98m. As we crossed the line, Manuel Mena keeled over and sounded and looked horrible. It was then that I realized I had been a WUSS! I felt like I normally did after a workout, but nothing more. He had mentally defeated me, and absolutely deserved the win. After the race I did a 6 mile cool down with Manuel and Robert Finicum (5k winner, that dude knows how to get in the right races!). Manuel doesn't speak much English (He is getting his MBA at UVU and is from Mexico), so I got to practice my very limited Spanish during the run. Very cool dude.

Even though I feel a bit frustrated with myself after this race, I think it will serve to make me a better runner. I need to do those workouts that make me wanna keel over at the end. I need to get some of that  competitive fire under me! It has been too long, and a nice piece of humble pie never did anyone harm. I look forward to running better at the Deseret News Classic next week, and then at Saint George in October.

Going into this race I was particularly excited for 3 things: 1) A chance to get a new PR 2) A chance to win some dough, and 3) A chance to seek vengeance upon Manuel Mena, who just got me by a second last weekend. (Vengeance might be a strong word, but hey... let's make things tasty)
Getting off the bus I saw Brett Hales and Riley Cook, both of whom I was expecting to see there and knew already that they were in much better shape than I. I was surprised, however, to meet Jason Holt there. I didn't know much about Jason, but I came to find out he is a Utah State alum who has been training pretty seriously with Riley, Brett, and the rest of the "Ogden Crew"... and was ready to run "about 1:06". At that point I knew that I was likely out of the money... but I was still just as excited to attack my other two motives.
The gun went off and we went out fast. Through the mile Brett and Riley had already opened up a small gap. I was on the tails of Jason and Manuel at 4:51.9. By 1.5 miles, those two began to gap me as well. I realized I needed to be smart and control what I could control. I knew I couldn't control if Manuel was gonna run 4:50's, but I could make sure I didn't blow up! I also considered the fact that he might come back to me. Mile 2 was 4:58. I then began to settle into my rhythm hitting the next few miles in 5:05, 5:08, and 5:12. By mile 5 I realized I needed to use a Porta-Potty. I had wanted to go about 10 minutes before the race but the lines were too long. This urge weighed on my mind on and off for the rest of the race... but I am happy to say that I did NOT crap my pants. Miles 6 and 7 were 5:08 and 5:11. In the 8th mile we faced some gradual, but persistent uphill and I came through in 5:23. As far as I knew the uphills were over... WRONG. The next mile had some more uphill, but the downhill that proceeded it allowed me to run a 5:08. By this point I had been alone for about 7 miles, and everyone ahead of me was out of sight. I thought at least once to myself "If this were just a workout, I would stop right now." Not helpful thoughts, but I managed to keep my drive and focus. This whole time I was aiming for sub 1:08 (PR was 1:08:58) and I knew that the course would likely measure about .05m long on my Garmin... so I was hoping to keep my pace at 5:10 or faster. I checked my watch SEVERAL times throughout the race to see what my overall average was. With each mile in the second half of the race, the average creeped up. Mile 10 was 5:15 and at this point I was running through some of the 10kers. It was a little frustrating coming up on groups 5 wide walking or slowly jogging. A couple times I had to swerve outside the cones. Another time I almost hit a guy who seemed like he really wanted me to take his water cup. Mile 11 was 5:13. Looking ahead, I saw a bright jersey and realized that Manuel was coming back to me. With how I was feeling, and the distance he still had on me, I didn't plan or expect to catch him. Mile 12 was 5:11 and I had closed the gap much more on Manuel. I realized beating him was within my reach and went for it. The last kilometer is up a slight hill, which really really sucks when your watch tells you your average is 5:10 and you know you can't go any slower if you want to get your time goal. I didn't manage to pass Manuel until 400 meters to go. I sprinted hard for fear he could catch me. I sprinted all the way through the line and stopped my watch late at the second mat- 1:07:59!!! I had PR'd by a minute, beat 1:08, and beat my friendly rival. I came in 4th place, almost 2 minutes behind Jason Holt (1:06:03) and once again outside of the money... but I was pleased because I knew I placed as high as I could with that competition on that day. My last mile was a slow 5:26, and my last .16m was 44 seconds (sub 5 pace). It was a good day for me and I'm happy I decided to compete!

Above the waterfall was very technical. We took plenty of stops and enjoyed it. The water in the spring atop Grove Creek, by Indian campground, WAS THE MOST REFRESHING AND GOOD-TASTING WATER I'VE EVER DRINKEN! Went under the waterfall at the end and it was exhilirating. The only bad part of the run- I biffed it 1.5 minutes into it on the most easy terrain of the whole adventure...scraped up my back pretty nice. ~30 miles this week have been on dirt trail, grass, or turf! If I can do that every week I think it'll help keep me healthy as I keep increasing the mileage.

a.m. 10m@6:52 on firebreak road and a little extra on BST to complete 10. HR 147. 173 SPM. I think I got to the end of the fire road. At 4.75m from the parking lot it started going really steep down and I didn't want to run that steep down or have to climb back up it, but I think that's where it ends. Today my first mile up the big hill was 8:45. Most of this run's elevation was above 5,500 ft.

This was a celebratory run after my last final this morning. DONE WITH MY 4TH SEMESTER OF PT SCHOOL! 4 more to go (3 of which are focused in the clinic). Also, this was my first semester getting a 4.0 so that was exciting.

5 minutes core

p.m. 6m@7:10. Exhausted. Had to sit down and drink some water at 3.5m... Dizzy, tired... Just wanted to lay down and fall asleep. I think it's a combo of not enough sleep, not enough food in the afternoon, and not enough water... Oh and the fact that I'm running more his week than I ever have in my life.

Written Saturday 8/22

am 10m @ 7:18 on farmer roads w/ Dallin in Pocatello. (8 dirt). 5 minutes core after

pm 2m@7:48 up farmer road above house before back hurt so bad I had to stop and walk back.

I woke up with a sore back Monday morning and thought an easy 10 would loosen me up and it'd feel better throughout the day. It didn't get any worse during the run and I pretty much forgot about it and made the stupid choice of doing core work after. Then my back got worse and worse throughout the day. I still tried to do my pm 7 miles but the pain got worse and worse until I was forced to stop. So much for my first 100 mile week being this week. Tuesday through Friday was spent doing some self rehab (heat, ice, stretching, TENS unit, vibrator, ibu profen, etc.) as well as seeing a couple people who helped me out while at BYU for massage and a chiropractic adjustment. The stiffness and pain has improved every day since Monday with the exception of Tuesday morning being absolutely frightening. Last time my back seized up on me like this (at the end of last year), it also took about a week to clear up no matter what I did. Sometimes with acute back pain you just have to do the best you can for it and wait it out. There was no traumatic event, just the stress on my body of running 91 miles last week coupled with sleeping on the ground for 2 days, then an overly soft mattress for 2 days, and lots of time sitting in the car before and after runs w/ the travel to and from Island park.

8m@6:58! I didn't feel like my normal self... I was conciously trying to run with a loose back, leaving me to feel a bit unstable. Ran in the heat at 11am after giving myself the morning to loosen up with a hot bath and some ibu profen w/ breakfast. My symptoms are  typically the worst in the morning. I'm optimistic I'll resume normal training on Monday! Let's look at the bright side... maybe one (really) down week of training will help keep me healthy over the next 6 weeks in preparation for St George.

If only all of our build-ups could go perfect... Obviously, that's rarely ever the case. Just keep the faith and approach things cautiously and wisely as you've been doing. A missed week in the scheme of things isn't going to derail all that you've worked so hard to build this summer. I think your back will be in the clear soon and you'll be ready to roll come game time.

25@5:58

Began at 6am w/ Rex Shields and Matt Poulsen at the Murdock canal trail. I woke up Friday, and again Saturday, with a sore throat. So I was a little nervous for this morning's run. Besides a little extra dryness in my mouth and throat, it proved to be of no consequence and my energy felt fine throughout. Matt ran with us for 18 before jogging the last couple for 20. When Rex and I got to 21, we started a pickup. After 1 mile in 5:37, my stomach was cramping way too much and I had to slow down to 5:50's for a couple miles before I felt better again the last mile and finished in the 5:40's. Rex put at least 30 seconds on me in the last 3 miles. He is gonna run well in Chicago. He always races better than he trains. Short water stops at 8.5, 15.5, and 21, with a 5 minute stop at 10.

My longest run ever and my longest week ever by 10 miles! My legs felt fried after Tuesday so I ended up skipping a thursday interval workout. I was concerned about trade-off this week of quality for quantity, and decided to calculate my average mile pace for the week- 6:36. That made me feel a little better about all those runs over 7:00 pace.

***I need to figure out hydration and nutrition during the race still... I only took 1 gu at 15 miles yesterday. Any suggestions for the FRB community on how to practice and what works best for most people are greatly appreciated! Water or gatorade? mixed? How many gu's? When/how often? Caffeine?***

From Jason D on Sun, Sep 06, 2015 at 13:13:50 from 68.80.27.222

Nutrition is tricky and highly individual for the marathon. I am not running anywhere near as fast as you are, but I generally try to get a gel in every 10k for the first 30k, then I usually stop because I don't want them coming back up. I keep one on reserve just in case.

I train primarily on an empty stomach and without water, but I generally do one long run with a couple gels to see what I can handle. It's best not to wait to take a gel no matter how good you feel. If you take it when your energy lags, it's probably too late. Take them with a little water. It can help to take a bit of gel in several stages (I think Riley found this helpful if I recall) because too much of that goop can trigger your gag reflex.

I sip water as much as I can because you don't get much, which is more true when you are a faster runner.

Try some gels before race day. GU are quite thick, while PoweGels are much thinner in consistency (more sodium too). I use a hippy-ish gel produced by Humma because it tastes like raspberry jam and the consistency ain't bad, but I think I am the minority on these.

Looks like you are adapting to marathon training smoothly.

I haven't been able to find official results yet, but Melody Jensen also ran and got the course at 3.01 miles. I think the next guy was Timpanogos' top runner about 20 seconds back. I'm sure he coulda stuck with me, but they were just using it as a workout. I was happy nobody was really too serious because I was only doing this to support a kid in my neighborhood who runs for the team (race entry fees go directly to that runner's account). Even though today was supposed to be a complete recovery day after Saturday's 25 and before tomorow's big workout, I wanted to win just in case there was a cool prize. Turns out it was just a trophy. Oh well, it was still fun and my legs feel like I just ran easy this morning so I should still be good to go for tomorrow's workout. 4m cooldown @ 7:29.

Today was about gaining confidence in my downhill running ability, and in getting used to taking in enough fluid and nutrition during the run. We had a great group of guys and I think pretty much everyone took a turn leading. Fritz certainly pulled us along the first 3+ miles. Jon Kotter was with me at 9 but had to stop to use the porta-potty, he continued his tempo after. Mike and Scott were pretty close behind me and then Fritz pretty close behind them. Matt was in the lead when he stopped at 8. No way I woulda had such a good workout without everybody there feeding off each other. I hope we have a similar group helping each other along in 3 weeks at the race. I'm still a little unsure about pacing, nutrition, hydration, sleep, etc when it comes to race day for the marathon... but I love having these guys to bounce ideas off of and get tips from. From Ben VanBeekum on Mon, Sep 14, 2015 at 13:55:43 from 159.212.71.77

I usually do one more last long tempo 2 weeks out before STG. Usually 13-15 miles down Monte Cristo. It is usually the run I look forward to all year with the colors changing and cool air. But after that I usually recover and might do a small tempo just to not get stale over the next two weeks.

It was 85 degrees out there today and I definitely felt that. I've also had some diarrhea yesterday and today (TMI?). First mile felt pretty easy but after that the pace didn't feel quite as automatic as I would have liked. I had to be tough the last mile and decided to do 6 instead of 7... almost decided to stop at 5, but I thought one last "tough" effort would be better for keeping me mentally sharp. It still wasn't a "big" workout and I am cutting back on the mileage this week, so I'm not concerned at all about it being too much to close.  Had Ryan Waite hold my bottle out for me at the 3m 180 degree turn around. I took my power gel and downed some water. I still don't feel very efficient at coordinating that with breathing. The nice thing is that you don't breathe very hard when running downhill, so it should be easier on race day. It truly is pretty easy from here on out... just a little sharpening speedy 800m repeats on Thursday and a moderate 10-11 on Saturday.

About 80% of them had good track etiquette but there were a couple ladies walking dogs in lane 1 that couldn't seem to figure it out.

Decided to run slower 800's and do more of fartlek (2 min jog) instead of inverval (3 min rest) cuz sub 2:20 just seemed faster than I felt like moving tonight.

Got food poisoning from Costa Vida Friday night. (At least I hope it was just food poisoning or some other 24 hr bug). Had a horrible night, waking up with cramping legs and emergency bathroom events... My wife was out of town and got back late Saturday afternoon. That gave me time to rehydrate the best I could and attempt a run around 7pm.

1m- 8:22...hard to get moving...felt nauseated. Walked back to the car, discretely peed in the grass, and attempted a little more around the asphalt track by the Murdock... .45m @ 8:00 pace was about all I could handle. My legs liked the feeling of moving but I just wanted to barf the whole way.

It's now Sunday night and I've felt pretty good today! Instead of 8 tomorrow I'll probably go 10 to not feel overly tapered. I'm confident I'll still feel 100% on race morning and be ready for the same performance.

So I'm wanting to go out the first 1/2 in 1:11:30... Who is with me? Is that too slow for you, Fritz? I'm thinking it's conservative enough that I wouldnt ruin a sub 2:21 chance, but it's fast enough that if I'm feeling great I can still turn the burners on the last half for a 1:08:30 and sub 2:20.

Good to hear you are feeling better. I think 1:11:30 is a good first split. For you I don't think it will be overly fast and still leaves the opportunity to hit sub 2:20 as you said. It seems the best races run at STG are at least 3 min negative splits.

This will be a long report so I can remember and learn from it in the future. Please don't feel obligated to read :)

Shorter recap found here: http://sojournersracingteam.blogspot.com/2015/10/saint-george-marathon-taylor-farnsworth.html

Woke up at 4:10 race morning after not being able to fall asleep till someime after 1. Before then I just could not get comfortable. I felt like I had so much energy from the taper and from averaging 8 hours of sleep all week leading up to it (I have usually just been getting 7). I didn't feel nervous, just unable to sleep. I also was up 5-6 times to pee between 10 and 1. I think next year I will experiment with some sleeping pills or something on the long runs leading up to the race. If they don't make me too groggy, I will use them the night before. I figure 2.5 hrs is enough time after waking up to get over the grogginess if there is any. And I will for sure not drink so much water between dinner and bed. I need to drink more water earlier in the day instead.

My father-in-law drove me from the hotel to the busses at 4:35. I got in a long line, and I was on a bus leaving the park by 5:00. I got to the top at about 5:40. I felt I had plenty of time to use the bathroom and relax at the top. I was plenty warm and comfortable waiting.

6:25-6:30 Took my Powergel with a little water and did a .4m warmup easy jog with 1 little stride.

6:40 on the starting line right after the wheelchairs went off.

6:45 Start: First few miles I was kinda like a slinky behind Aaron, Fritz, Kotter, and a Japanese guy. The Japanese guy dropped out shortly after 5k and grabbed his leg. At mile 3, no one was there to hand us our bottles and it was too dark to see from far away whose bottle was whose. Kotter grabbed a bottle and realized a few seconds later that it wasn't his. He felt bad and turned around to return it and find his own... This probably put him 10 seconds behind me and I was 3 seconds behind the leaders. I probably was already running too fast the first 5k (5:22, 5:27, 5:13) but then the steeper downhills came and I naturally went a little faster through 7 (5:08, 5:20, 5:07, 5:18). Kotter wanted to just roll with the easy early quick pace and I didn't want to run alone... so my average was 5:17 through 7... probably 5 seconds/mile faster than it should've been. We also had to stop in our tracks at 7 to get our bottles... we were both really wanting to take our gels so it was worth the stop, but frustrating that we now had big problems at 2 stations in a row.

We then ran well up Veyo in 5:57. Unfortunately, we fell off the pace a little bit on 9-14... especially the uphill 9-12. (5:49, 5:38, 6:01, 5:40, 5:23, 5:23). We went through the half in 1:11:55 and it was a little tougher than I thought it should've been up those hills. I think Kotter was upset about his lost 13 seconds so he was content to let me lead a lot of that uphill or run on the outside of the turn a little more than desired. It would have been better to be just relaxed in a pack at this point. There was also a strong headwind from about 9-12. I also had a stomach cramp for a couple miles. I don't think it affected me too much. Some deep breaths helped to relieve it and it was gone in about 10 minutes. I don't mean to make excuses for myself. But next time I need to be more aware of what is going on, and not just try to stick to the planned pace no matter what, especially since I went too quick the first 7. I took a half gel at 11 cuz I didn't know if I would be able to get it at 15. Around 14 miles, Kotter fell behind me a ways. I could tell my legs weren't as fresh as I wanted them to be at this point in the race, but I also knew I was behind my desired pace.

At mile 15 we got some steeper downhill and I tried to just relax and go with it. I also think I got a little excited coming up on the aid station. I waived them over so I didn't have to run wide to get my bottle and gel. I noticed that I typically ran a little faster through the aid stations, or at least felt like it. It was unintentional, but in the future I think it'd be good to even slow down a touch while taking my bottle. 15 was 5:03, much faster than intended. I believe that's where I passed Fritz. Then I was just a step or two ahead of him through 16 in 4:57. I think I was just excited to be up there with Fritz and my mind told me that "now we just have a 10 mile tempo down the canyon... NBD". WRONG. It is a big deal to run a 4:57 when you aren't feeling great. It was also not my intention to go that fast for that mile. Iain even warned me to be careful on 15-16. I was not careful enough.

Shortly after mile 16 I realized I had really blown it. My breathing got difficult for a minute and I thought "Do I have asthma? What is this feeling?" Another minute and my legs felt the lack of oxygen. I decided I needed to slow it down for a couple miles and hopefully I could recuperate and still finish well. 17 and 18 were 5:31 and 5:36, but I was still only feeling worse. At this point Fritz had opened up a big gap on me. I contemplated quitting, thinking there was no way I could make it to the finish. Knowing, however, that I had lots of family and friends there watching and cheering for me, that I had put lots of time and effort into training, and that Iain had spent a great amount of time coaching me, I knew I couldn't give up until I was literally forced to.

Mile 19 to the bridge and then up the hill was a challenge. My body took half of a walking step under the bridge before my mind took over and said "no, not yet". I ran  (slowly) all the way up the hill. 6:06. I took another half or full gel and water here. The next mile was back down and I managed a 5:37. 21 had a lot of drop but I still could only manage a 5:27. Mile 22 had some good uphill in it and I could only barely manage a 6:06. 23 was a continuation of the struggle, even though there was so much downhill. The aid station was a little before the mile marker. At this point I knew my best bet was to walk and get as much water and gel as I could. I walked for probably 150 meters or more. I hit my split while walking- 6:33. The next mile, which also included walking at the beginning, was 5:52. I walked again at mile 24, 25, and 25.5... these are rough estimates. I figure I walked about 400 meters of the race. 25-26 were 6:50 and 6:53. In the last 3 miles I was passed by 4 guys. They all gave me encouragement and helped me reach the finish line. Thanks you, Scott, Mike, Nate, and Ben. You guys are awesome! Ben helped me remember that it was worth fighting for the top 10. The desire to finish and not be caught by anyone else, and the extra strength from the last walk, was enough to help me bring home the last .2 at 5:20 pace for a finishing time of 2:28:32 (5:40 pace) and a 6th place finish (really 7th including Scott).

This was a humbling and difficult experience for me. I trained so hard and dilligently over the past few months. I pushed myself to new distances in my training. Things were looking so good. I really wanted to finish in the top 3 and even more so I wanted to run at least under 2:21. 2:21 may have been a little over-ambitious for my first marathon, especially considering the headwind and the heat the last few miles. I do think with decent sleep the night before and smarter pacing I could have been under 2:23 today. Coulda Shoulda Woulda doesn't mean anything though. Now I get to stay hungry and find the satisfaction in getting a big PR next time I race the marathon! Thanks to the FRB community and all the friends I've made in training. You guys have been great examples and extremely encouraging and helpful. I know pretty much all of us ran slower than we thought we would this time. I think that just goes to show the conditions weren't ideal. We'll all be ready for some nice PR's the next time around!

Great report, Taylor.

You ran a courageous race. I still think your fitness was in line with your goal. Sometimes it's just not your day. Odd that so many of us had similar experiences that day.

You've got a lot more in the tank. Keep it up!

First marathons are tough, good learning experiences. 6th place is still great. Next one will be even better.

From RileyCook on Mon, Oct 05, 2015 at 20:03:45 from 73.52.134.194

Great debut marathon Taylor.

I know you were hoping for better, but all things considered I think this was a great outcome for you. It's a good debut (better than most people), it leaves you hungry and motivated for another attempt, and it allows you to learn from your mistakes to improve the next time.

For the mileage levels you had over the summer, I really do feel you got quite a bit out of it for this race. Keep slowly ramping that mileage up (but be smart and safe about it) and you'll see vast improvements. One of Coach Hislop's lines was "There's no substitute for mileage". That's especially true with the marathon. My outcomes are very predictably correlated with my monthly average volume for the 3-4 months leading into the race (mileage way more so than speed and fast workouts).

Again nice work and I can't wait to see how much time you cut off on the next one.

From Fritz on Mon, Oct 05, 2015 at 21:34:18 from 98.202.9.237

Great job Taylor! For a debut it takes some serious courage to go out at a ~2:20 pace not having a clue how you will feel at mile 20. Granted I am aslow learner but after 51 marathons I am still learning and relearning with every one. I look forward to some future training runs where I would be happy to share my two cents, always with the disclaimer "what works for me may not work for you" :)

From Jason D on Mon, Oct 05, 2015 at 21:48:00 from 68.80.27.222

That's a fine debut. And, hey, you're already thinking like a seasoned marathoner: "'now we just have a 10 mile tempo down the canyon...'" That's actually a productive lie we tell ourselves but it's good to mentally break the race down in manageable chunks.

From JPark on Mon, Oct 05, 2015 at 22:58:36 from 67.172.224.201

Taylor, very nice first marathon. Way to stick it out strong to the end. I think you'll see vast improvement your next go around. It was great to finally meet you in person.

1.2 slow warmup w/ Bret, Mike, Trevor, and David up a dirt road that landed us in the middle of the Big Springs 8k trail course that the Cascadia Trail Series puts on in July. Then a couple strides on the starting line.

Race went off and David Taylor was out to the front quick as usual. I was in a pack w/ the 3 Weber alumni through the mile in 5:03... David musta had 5+seconds on us. Shortly after that we passed him and came through 2 and 3 in 5:01 and 5:08.

During the 4th mile, the 3 Weber studs pulled away. I passed in 4:56 and they were probably 5 seconds or so faster. I decided to run my own race and try to PR (1:07:58)...and maybe they would come back to me if they'd gone out too hard. Turns out I was probably the one who went out too hard. I kept the effort up with a PR in mind through 8 miles before I realized it just wasn't gonna be a PR day for me. 5-10 were 5:15, 5:21, 5:11, 5:11, 5:24, 5:16.

At 10 miles, Benjamin was only 5 seconds behind me according to the splits I heard from Sasha. I knew I wouldn't PR, but I still wanted to get under 1:10 and I realized that Benjamin was right on track to do so too and that it was a big goal of his. I didn't want to put the brakes on, but I was waiting for him to catch me so we could take it in together. It was actually a positive motivator for me to keep running fast because I didn't want him to key off me and slow down if I slowed down too much.

When I felt someone come up on me on the uphill with less than a mile to go I thought it was him, but it was Nate! We exchanged encouraging words and he passed me and created a 3-4 second lead. I felt like I was breathing a little harder than him and decided it wasn't worth putting up a fight. In the end, neither of us would win any prize money. Looking back though, it would have been fun to have a close finish! He probably had more in the tank too and just didn't want to embarras me by dominating me at the end :) but I should have tested the waters. Miles 11-13 were 5:18, 5:31, 5:31 and the last .16 was 4:58 pace for a finish time and place of 1:08:54 and 5th.

I'm glad I did this race! It got me back to training again soon after Saint George Marathon. I'm not back to full fitness or form but it was good to get another good effort in this year. Shout out to Trevor Ricks running a great time in his first half marathon (I think!).

P.S. My drop bag never showed up at the finish line. For the first time, I decided to use my Runner's Corner Sojourner's bag, as I've seen other club members do it in the past with no problem. I had my Nike Pegasus trainers, Haunted half long sleeve and gloves, and all my RC warmup gear in there! I had it well labeled and put it in the right bus window so I have to believe that someone stole it. Hopefully I'm wrong and it shows up soon. :(

Wow I thought I would try to keep a lock on you guys but 5:22s is no match for 5:05s! Plus stopping to tie a #$@ shoe kinda puts a dent in the time too. You were right on the 1st mile, I had 4:58 - I bet Benjamin was grateful for your push!

12.03m@7:33 on the trails today. Did some exploring and found some places NOT to go. When I got the rock pile, I decided to go right on the Great Western Trail...MISTAKE! I quickly lost all the elevation I had just worked so hard to gain and it was so rocky and uneven that it was slower than most climbs. It dumped me off on the firebreak road where I saw a group of 3 runners and a dog. I stopped and chatted and then continued on till I saw a trail going off the side of the firebreak road. That led me to "Down Dragon's Back" or whatever strava called it... that was crazy. Then running up the Provo River Pkwy Climb was brutal. I went as slow as possible cuz I wanted to do it without walking or stopping and I ended up with the CR. Yipee! 5:12 for .4m climb (13:00 pace) @ 20% grade... 422 feet. To you avid trail runners maybe that is NBD, but that was dang steep for me! Then I continued back towards home base via the firebreak and added on some on the BST to get to 12. I saw the group of 3 runners and dog completing their Trail 51 loop and ran it in with them. Fun morning but next time I won't go right at the rockpile :) 2 or 3 stops total.
